Dance-a-thon 2009
Dance-a-thon Pledge Form
Concepts in Motivation, Inc. (CM) is holding its third annual Dance-a-thon to benefit the American Lung Association of Maryland and children suffering with asthma. Over the last two years, we have had over 100 participants who danced the night away to raise more than $7,500 for Asthma’s Camp
Superkids.
The event this year will be held on Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 am – 10:00 pm at the Longwood Community Center in Olney, Maryland. This fundraiser will provide needed money and resources to support those with Asthma donated directly to the American Lung Association of Maryland.
As a result of our past events, The American Lung Association of Maryland recognized CM with the 2007 Community Youth Service Award for the National Capital area. The award is presented to those who have contributed a significant number of volunteer hours and funds to help the American Lung Association of Maryland fight lung disease. CM was honored to receive this recognition. This could not have been done without our CM families and sponsors.
I personally have seen how this disease can have an impact on children and their families. My daughter, Brittany, suffers from asthma. I have watched how she has been able to deal with the effects of this condition. She has controlled her asthma through hard work and learning more about how to treat the disease. Her efforts have allowed her to pursue her love of dance for the past 16 years and she now attends Winthrop University as a dance major.
Please consider having your child participate in the Dance-a-thon and if you or anyone you know in the community could provide a sponsorship, or at a minimum, a donation, to join CM in achieving our goal of increasing last year’s donation, it would be greatly appreciated.
Participation fee is: $40
Sponsorship levels are Gold ($500), Silver ($250), Bronze ($100).
Detailed information and registration and pledge forms will be given to each dancer in the coming weeks.
I believe philanthropy is such an important aspect of running a business and hope you share that sentiment as well and will join me in this fund raising event. Thank you in advance for your contribution to the community
We at CM look forward to a great event with your support.
Dance-a-thon 2008
Building on the success of the first dance-a-thon, Concepts in Motivation, Inc. held its second annual Dance-a-thon to benefit the American Lung Association of Maryland and children suffering with asthma on Saturday, April 12, 2008. With more than 30 participants (many from our own studios) plus staff, we danced the day and night away to raise more than $3,000 for Asthma’s Camp Superkids.
Concepts in Motivation, Inc., was recognized for the first annual event by the American Lung Association of Maryland’s 2007 Community Youth Service Award for the National Capital area. The award was presented to individuals who contributed a significant number of volunteer hours to help the American Lung Association of Maryland fight lung disease. Concepts in Motivation, Inc., received this award in recognition of the outstanding effort and commitment of the students to collect pledges and hold a Dance-A-Thon to raise money for asthma programs.
This year’s event was held from 10:00am to 10:00pm at the Longwood Community Center in Olney, Maryland. The fundraiser provides needed money and resources to support Camp Superkids which is a residential camp for children suffering with the disabling effects of asthma. The camp focuses on teaching kids how to live with and manage their disease.
Thank you to those that contributed and we hope you will join us again next year.
Committees of staff and parent volunteers from the studios solicited food donations, silent auction items, and sponsorships that all aided in making the event a great success.
In addition, Desiree Rivera performed and taught belly dancing to the participants. She is an advocate for the American Lung Association and supports events all over the area. Desiree not only suffers from the disease herself, but she also lost her brother to the illness when he was 14.

Dance studios raise money for asthma relief
by Melissa J. Brachfeld | Staff Writer
Put a group of 40 dancers in a recreation center for an 18-hour period, throw in some classical ballet and jazz, add a pinch of community awareness and it all adds up to the Olney Studio of Dance’s first dance-a-thon, designed to benefit children with asthma.
Larry Rose of Damascus, president and owner of Concepts in Motivation, which owns and operates five Montgomery County and Carroll County dance studios, said the dance-a-thon was held at Longwood Recreation Center in Olney from 6 p.m. Dec. 2 to noon Dec. 3. He noted the event raised more than $4,500 to send eight children with asthma to Camp Superkids, a week-long overnight camp sponsored each summer by the American Lung Association of America. This year’s Camp Superkids session will be held in Maryland July 15-20.
In honor of the Olney Studio of Dance’s 30th anniversary, Rose said Concepts in Motivation wanted to sponsor an event that would not only celebrate, but also educate.
Rose’s own 17-year-old daughter, Brittany, suffers from asthma and he said he has witnessed just how serious the condition can be. Still, he said, Brittany continues to dance. This holiday season, the soon-to-be college freshman starred as the Snow Queen in the Maryland Youth Ballet’s production of ‘‘The Nutcracker.”
Because of his own experience, Rose said, asthma seemed like the natural route to go when choosing a cause to support.
‘‘It was a huge success,” he said.
Rose said the American Lung Association of Maryland sanctioned the event and provided information and volunteers. Each of the five dance studios — Mount Airy Studio of Dance, Briggs Chaney Dance Center, Clopper’s Mill Dance Center, Damascus Studio of Dance and Olney Studio of Dance — were represented at the dance-a-thon, he said.
This year’s dance-a-thon was just the beginning, he added. ‘‘We’re looking forward to doing it again next year with more support from the community to raise awareness about children with asthma,” Rose said.
